Nintendo Touch Golf: Birdie Challenge - Review

Golf. Quite a competitive sport. This game takes competition further though. This is more than a golf game. This is a better-than-average golf game that will impress in nearly every aspect possible. This will not blow you away, yet you will be on it non-stop. Like myself ^_^

Normally, I would turn my shoulders to such a game, the words 'TOUCH' and 'GOLF' really did not go hand-in-hand, until I brought this game. It changes the way you probably imagined any golf game to be, in the fact that instead of swinging your analogue stick, you swing your… stylus!

On the top screen, you have the view of which direction your shot is going in. The path appears as an opaque yellow colour, and changes with what happens on the bottom screen. The bottom screen, in the first 'phase', shows the precise spot where your shot will go; this will vary with swing speed. Then, after touching the 'SWING' button, the screen turns into its second 'phase'. On the bottom screen will appear a golf club, and 3 lines. The first line is inline with the ball, the second line is the power requires reaching the pin, without slopes etc, and the third line is max speed. Using your stylus, you have to bring the golf club back, and swing through the ball.

The above is very hard to explain!

There are plenty of unlockables too. Most of the courses have to be unlocked, and there are plenty of things to buy at the clubhouse as well, including new shirts, new clubs, anything that involves golf really! To unlock the golf courses, you have to get a high position in the championship mode on that particular course. Clubs, balls, boots and gloves are all available from the Clubhouse, and, depending on the championship level.

There are plenty of faults with this game that I have to point out. Firstly, the backgrounds are really appalling. They are all pixilated and look really bad. They could have worked on the backgrounds a bit more too make them look more realistic. Having said that, the swing motion is very well done, as you don't see any lag in frame rate, if you get what I mean.

Secondly, it's a pretty easy game. Practice for a couple of rounds, then go and complete Championship mode. It's so easy. There is also a problem in the fact that if you complete the game, there isn't much afterwards that you can do, apart from playing against your friends.

Multiplayer is good. We like it, even though we expected it from such a game. I like thrashing all of my mates!!! Bwahaha! I was a little disappointed, however, to discover that this game will not be online compatible, which would have suited this game very well in my opinion. This is not the case, and so I will have to sob, after facing no competition from people around me.

The start of the game is fabulous though. You get too choose what you look like, gender, and whether you are a calm or a nutty person. I, being nutty, chose to be calm. Then, you should really go for a practice round or five, because it takes a while to get used to the controls. After that, complete the Championship mode.

I really enjoyed this game. I hated the pixilated graphics, but the sound was quite heartening. This, in my opinion, is much better than the like of Tiger Woods because of the unique control system. I want more, and I want Internet play. Imagine a similar game on the Revolution…

Gameplay

This game almost has it all. Fell short because it was way too easy.

8

Innovation

Touch screen control well used, but no internet play?

9

Graphics and Sound

Pixilated graphics, yet heartening sounds. I'd prefer a swap.

6

Value

After you complete it, there's little more too do, unless you have friends.

VERDICT- This game is great for a golf game. Loving this all the way. I'm just hoping that a Revolution version comes out, as it suits the motion sensitive controller. 76%
